Sims 3 - Why can't I marry my boyfriend?

I am only playing with one girl, this is the third generation. She has a boyfriend now, Clyde Ricks from Sunset Valley. I have married before but everything I do to try to get them to marry isn't working. Why? Is it a glitch and can I fix it?
